Description
This large piece measures approximately 29 x 13 cm (including its base) and shows the Bonxie.
The drystane dyke depiction is the dyke the encircles my garden.
This piece is part of a new collection featuring birds, found in Orkney, sitting on fences , walls or dykes.
I made this using clear glass and kiln firing the piece up to four times with enamels and silverstain.
I hope you like my new bird glass?
Great Skua (Bonxie)
Anyone who wanders off the beaten track on the walk to the Old Man of Hoy will have met a Great Skua; they will dive-bomb anyone who goes near to their nest! These fierce brown birds emit a tuk tuk tuk call and specialise in robbing other birds of the fish they have caught.
RSPB say,
The Great Skua is a pirate of the seas which will steal a free meal from birds as large as Gannets. It also preys on smaller birds such as Puffins. Great Skuas show little fear of humans – anybody getting close to the nest will be repeatedly dive-bombed by the angry adult. These birds migrate to the northernmost isles of the UK from their wintering grounds off the coasts of Spain and Africa. At a distance, they look stout and dark and show white wing flashes in flight.
