Part of my new collection of Birds on Fence-posts, this piece features measures approximately 6.5 x 14cms.
The design features a silhouette of curlew sitting on a fence post.
The drystane dyke featured is drawn from my own drystane dyke that runs around the edge of my garden.
I made this using clear sheet glass. I cut the glass to size, clean and sand the cut edges. I start applying the design using enamels, silverstain and black paint. The image has to be applied in three firings. Each firing lasting 18+ hours and seals the layers of enamels. Each firing builds the depth of colour , texture and detail.
The final firing includes slumping (melting the glass) over a mould – which gives the glass the curved shape.
Each piece is made individually and completely by hand.

The long billed large wader with its distinctive bubbling call is a sure sign of spring for many across the UK. However, as many of you will already be aware, curlew in the UK are struggling and its distinctive sound has been lost in many areas. The population has nearly halved since the mid-1990s. This has been driven by a decline in the quality and quantity of breeding habitat and predation of nests and young.
