Description
This is a new design featuring popular birds in Orkney.
The mini curve measures approximately 14 x 10cms.
It is made completely by hand.
I cut the clear glass from sheet glass, clean and add the background enamels. The glass is kiln fired to 800 deg.
I remove the piece, once it has cooled from its overnight firing and clean the edges. This process is repeated another two times. Each firing helps to develop the depth of colour and detail of the design.
The final firing at 700 deg. also slumps the glass over a metal mould. As the glass softens it will adopt the shape of the mould.
Slumping the glass over the mould gives me a freestanding ‘C’ shaped product.
Oystercatchers have been around in Orkney for hundreds of years, as their bone remains have been identified at many of Orkney’s archaeological sites. Orkney’s commonest wader, approximately 12,500 pairs nest in the islands each year.
